What is an ACL Tear?

The anterior cruciate ligament, commonly referred to as the ACL, is located inside the knee joint. The ACL is an important ligament necessary for proper movement. Injury such as a tear to this ligament can be debilitating. This can happen with hyperextension or direct impact to the knee. When the ACL is overstretched the ligament may tear. With an ACL tear, the knee can become unstable. It is important to be properly diagnosed by an orthopedic surgeon if you think you have an ACL tear.

Symptoms of an ACL Tear

Injury to the ACL usually occurs through activities such as sports where sudden direction change occurs. Symptoms of an ACL injury may include these:

  • Swelling of the knee
  • Instability
  • Knee pain
  • Unable to sustain weight
  • Pop usually associated when injured
