What is Lithotripsy?

Lithotripsy is a technique used to treat kidney stones. The urologist at FAITH Surgical Center can use extracorporeal shock waves to break the kidney stones into granular-size pieces so they can more easily pass out of the body. The patient may have the process done while lying on a water-filled soft cushion, which allows the waves to pass.

Benefits of Lithotripsy

Lithotripsy is a wonderful procedure used for the removal of kidney stones. Its primary benefit is that it is non-invasive, requiring no surgery with incisions. That makes this procedure a preferred method for many patients and urologists. Additional benefits of lithotripsy are:

  • Reduced costs for hospitals stays
  • Short recovery time
  • Fewer complications
  • Ability to continue normal activities quickly
  • Less discomfort
